GeoWS Demo Scripts

An summary of things to highlight in demos.

Key Points

  • Collaborative effort between UNAVCO, MG&G and IRIS.
  • Data servers reside at individual institutions, each institution has own
    database and formats.
  • Based on open standards, open source tools.

uDig (v1.1RC6 works well)

Start by showing layers in a preloaded map of one of the Focus Sites.

Preload all other catalogs but one, add styles to features, etc.

MGDS: MGDS Topography for background topo and bathymetric data.

IRIS: WFS realtime, CMT and PBO. Prefer blue labeled triangle for realtime stations, cross in dark purple for CMT and green square for PBO. Event layer(s) loaded as WMS one layer above background map.

UNAVCO: WFS CCPS Monument and Baja Campaigns. Orange triangle for CGPS, yellow labeled star for Baja Campaign.

Show how to add a catalog from a URL on a web page with drag-and-drop, then select layer from catalog (possibly a MGDS cruise tracks?)

Selecting a feature from a WFS allows better use of the "i" tool. URLS from the information table of features can be opened with left-click (apple-click on a Mac laptop). Show information available from each feature.

Zoom into region with ship track data to show regions with high bathymetric definition.

Create new map and add layers of iterest to demo watcher.

Google Earth (don't use v 4.0.2413)

Start with a few network links added. Recommended:

FDSN stations

Seismic Events 2000-Pres

http://www.iris.washington.edu/geoserver/wms?service=WMS&request=GetMap&format=application/vnd.google-earth.kml+XML&width=1024&height=1024&srs=EPSG:4326&layers=topp:Events2000toPres&styles=point

GPS Monuments

Add the MGDS bathymetry as a KML file.  [get that from here]

Zoom into San Francisco area, show all three type of info: San Simeon quake (6.4), Santa Cruz seismic station and multiple monuments.

MapBuilder (if time allows)

Open source configurable widget.
