under development.

The geoscience community has shown great enthusiasm for developing systems that bring vast digital catalogs within easy reach of educators, scientists, and students.

Emerging standards for data representation and GIS mapping tools enable data centers to expand the range of services they offer, greatly increasing the accessibility of cross-referenced data sets. As data centers begin to expose their data and services, the next challenge to address is data interoperability: the representation of cross-disciplinary data within a single application drawn from multiple sources.

The GeoWS group formed in August 2006 between cooperating data centers in a development effort to integrate their data sets in an OGC-standard mapping environment.  The participating centers are:
  • IRIS - a provider of global digital seismic data
  • UNAVCO - a provider of geodetic, seismic, and tectonic data
  • NGDC - a provider of geophysical data from the seafloor, solid earth environment, and observations from space
  • MGDS - a provider of marine geoscience data
  • IAGT - a provider of geospatial information technologies
